Baned from Programming!
I’ve recently got employed at a software related firm here in Kuwait. since i don’t have any prior “official” experience in a work environment, i was assigned the official job title of “Assistant Programmer Trainee”. i work from 8 till 5 from Sunday though Thursday. and get about double what i used to get back when i was just a student.
anyways, back to the subject: in order to work their, they make everyone (including me) sign an agreement binding me to an unhealthy number of restrictions. i expected that, however, i did not expect being band form open source development!
here is a rough translation to what is mentioned in the contract:
- I may not develop applications while I’m still working for them, not even on my spare time, nor as open source.
- I may not work in a company or go in direct competition with them for a period of one year. if i did i would be required by low to compensate them by forking 5000KD (roughly 15000$)
I’ve got to admit, I’m stating to get getting paranoid worrying if i might breach the agreement by posting tutorials (which will naturally contain code) . I intend to talk with the people in charge, to know exactly what is ok and what isn’t. i’m also going to try an get written permission for open source development even if that means i wont be able write programs in a specific field.
although, there are a few loop holes i managed to find when reading the contract, although i hope it doesn’t have to come to that . i guess reading the MS-EULA and the GPL has its benefits 🙂
At least, i’ll get more time to blog/hardware assuming i have the time in the first place, so expect more posts (and sadly less tutorials) to come.
Final word, i’ve been working on a great application at work but sadly i wont be able share it with you people.. you know.. hush hush
